When people with diabetes can control their blood sugar (glucose), they are more likely to stay healthy. People with diabetes use two kinds of management devices; glucose meters and other diabetes management tests. Glucose meters help people with diabetes check their blood sugar at home, school, work and play. Other blood and urine tests reveal trends in diabetes management and help identify diabetes complications.
To test for glucose with a typical glucose meter, place a small sample of blood on a disposable test strip and place the strip in the meter. The test strips are coated with chemicals that combine with glucose in blood and produce a reaction on the strip that the meter reads. Once the meter reads the sample of blood on the strip is calculates the level of blood sugar in the persons blood. Some meters measure the amount of light that is reflected off of the strip after the chemicals combine with the glucose and other meters read the amount of electricity that can flow through the test strip based on how much glucose is present in the sample of blood.
Most meters have a small computer in them so that it will remember each of the tests that you perform for the glucose in your blood. This is helpful to you and your doctor as it will recall each of the samples that you have placed on each test strip and recall the results of each measurement you have made. Many meters also record the time and day that the test was performed and this is helpful because it allows the doctor to know how you have been doing the managing your blood sugar levels.
